Reimagining Desktop Mode : ChromeOS as the Future of Android Desktop Experience

K

We are living in a time of rapid paradigm shifts, specifically as to how people define a personal computer. Over the past decade, there has been a radical shift in the market, with more people relying on their mobile phone as their primary computer and a growing segment of the consumer market is even forgoing the purchase of a dedicated laptop or desktop altogether. Mobile Phone manufacturers have responded by exponentially increasing the power of their devices to keep up with the demand and hardware that was previously limited to mobile devices has started to make its way to modern laptops and desktops.

Several Android Device Manufacturers including Samsung, Motorola, ASUS, Huawei and even Google have all worked on implementing a Desktop Mode that allows you to transform your phone into desktop PC when connected to a external display. The problem is that every manufacturer has descided to do their own thing and interpret what they believe users want in a desktop mode. Unfortunately this "Wild West" approach has ensured that there will be compatibility issues with third-party applications and will ultimately prevent the widespread adpotion of using a phone as a desktop computer.

There is, however, a solution - ChromeOS...

Migrating To Plain Text : Moving Away From WordPress

K

I registered KMyers.me on June 29th, 2012 to maintain my online presence after I neglected to renew my previous domain. Since then, this website has gone through many evolutions. I started with a simple, hard-coded HTML site and later migrated to a primitive blog platform I developed in PHP in early 2013 as I was learning PHP. I decided to give up on my blog platform and join the millions of websites that were hopping on the WordPress bandwagon. This all changed over the past several months when I began the process of migrating away from WordPress, specifically to a static website generator known as MKDocs.

Announcing The Great American Book Of Presidential Tacos

K

So.... I wrote a book and this time it is not about tech or ChromeOS but a cookbook

Some of my best ideas start as a joke and people who know me IRL tend to agree that I can sometimes take a joke way too far... a few friends were joking around earlier this year and somehow the topic shifted to "what if Donald Trump was a taco?"... Well on the hour long drive home the next day, my mind decided to go down this rabbit hole and wonder what a taco inspired by each president would look like... and then this happened

Announcing the Re-Launch of Technical.chat

K

In late 2018, I decided to launch a new forum called Technical.Chat however the forum failed to take off. It was powered by a powerful yet clunky commercial forum platform that was slow and did not embrace modern responsive web technologies that make the forum work horribly on mobile devices. I closed the forum a few months after it’s launch to focus on other projects and to find solutions to address some of the problems with the old software platform. I am officially ready to announce the re-launch of Technical.chat!

Amazon Scam Breakdown : The Bait And Switch for False Reviews

K

I was doing some window shopping this morning while waiting for some code to build on my computer and a item that Amazon recommended to me quickly caught my eye. It is clearly a fake 2 TB USB Flash Drive which is unremarkable as I have seen countless fakes and even wrote about it back in 2018, the thing that caught my eye on the listing is that the flash drive had over 360 reviews with a 4.5 star average review. How could this be??? Is there actually a legitimate way to get 2 TB of real flash storage for under $100 or is there something fishy going on? Oh yes, its definitely rotten fish. I stumbled into a bit of a rabbit hole this morning while doing some research on how this scam works.

Rethinking Life in a Post COVID-19 World

K

I have been thinking a lot over the past several months to try to make sense of the uncertain future that awaits us as we learn to cope with the impact COVID-19 has had on society and what our future looks like. It is highly unlikely that COVID-19 will ever disappear and will likely haunt us for the foreseeable future. COVID-19 has opened many people’s eyes and it is clear that the way we have been doing things in the past are no longer wise to continue to do the same way in the future. This post is a brain-dump of some of my thoughts and ideas as to how things should change in the future to adjust to life in a post COVID-19 world.

ePaper Dashboard POC

K

I was a bit bored after work and decided to mess with a ePaper Display I purchased a while back ago to try to create a basic dashboard. This is a complete hack but it shows some of the potential uses of this display. I posted a few photos of my dashboard on Facebook and several people asked for the code and instructions to build their own. This is a quick write up, not a planned article so please dont expect much proof-reading to happen.

Yes! – 3D Printing PPE For Medical Staff and Frontline Workers is a HORRIBLE idea but here is why I will continue to do it

K

Over the past 3 weeks, I have been running 2-3 of my 3D printers almost non-stop to crank out face shields, masks and ear savers that are being donated to first responders and other frontline workers in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic. As of this posting, I have personally donated over 150 Face Shields and 30 face masks at no cost to those who are working at the front line to help to get this pandemic under control. I have had several people comment that I am wasting my time with printing PPE for first responders and I wanted to respond to some of these comments:

Tips for Surviving a Hurricane – 2019 Edition

K

I have lived in South Florida for almost 15 years and have seen my fair share of hurricanes. With the devastation that happened in Texas a few years from hurricane Harvey and the mess caused from Hurricane Irma, I wanted to revisit a post I wrote 2 years ago and do a write up on the steps I personally take to prepare for Hurricanes. I perform all of these steps prior to boarding up my windows.
