Linux is just a multi-tasking DOS with a graphical skin on it. Like Windows 3.1.Daniel Goller – 2015-06-13 14:17:34-0400And your point is?
Like Windows 3.1 is bad or something…Robert Hamilton – 2015-06-13 14:49:19-0400+Daniel Goller no it was great. I just wouldn’t want it on my phone when I could have Android.Kent Seaton – 2015-06-13 15:46:40-0400Doesn’t Android use Linux? Just another distro option without gnu tools.Robert Hamilton – 2015-06-13 19:36:03-0400+Kent Seaton I hope not!Kent Seaton – 2015-06-13 19:37:44-0400+Robert Hamilton actually it does. Has from the very start of development. More things use Linux than you may know.Robert Hamilton – 2015-06-13 19:41:54-0400+Kent Seaton NOooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! My phone runs on DOS?!?!? How can I ever make fun of an iPhone again???Kent Seaton – 2015-06-13 22:48:33-0400The Linux kernel has nothing to do with DOS really (I do see your analogy though). Even DOS has a kernel it used. Think of the kernel as the software version of a CPU… it handles everything at the machine level to translate information handled by the user through high level applications like “dir” and “mkdir”. DOS level would be like a usermode terminal in Linux. That’s a couple levels up from the kernel components. The big difference… the kernel used by DOS was dumb… couldn’t figure out what a driver was until you told it what, where to load, and what hardware it went to. The Linux kernel works better than the GUI base of Plug&Pray at the OS level. You have all but the most obscure hardware drivers already loaded before you even get to the usermode terminal. To give you an idea how far spread Linux is, there are even motherboards which are running the EUFI type bios built around a very low level Linux kernel with a custom UI. So even if you have Windows only running on your computer, it still may go through Linux first.Robert Hamilton – 2015-06-14 10:04:23-0400So… Slightly better DOS?Kent Seaton – 2015-06-14 11:14:16-0400Easily better DOS. Though you could get much worse.
